music
The music in Asteroid Pong is synthesized live and is different every run: it starts as techno and, as you level up, morphs into drum n' bass, jungle and breakcore, mixed between levels the way a DJ would. It also adapts to how you are playing.
Genre by level
The chart shows the base genre for each level and the band of how far it can run ahead or fall behind depending on how you play. Move your finger or mouse over it to see each level.
Which genre plays on each level
The genre travels with the level: techno at first, drum n' bass at level 14, jungle at 23 and breakcore from 30.
| level | genre |
|---|---|
| level 1 | techno (sometimes with a trance flavor) |
| levels 2–13 | techno slowly turning into drum n' bass |
| level 14 | drum n' bass, with a liquid stretch |
| levels 15–22 | drum n' bass turning into jungle |
| level 23 | jungle |
| levels 24–29 | jungle turning into breakcore |
| level 30 and up | breakcore |
Techno lasts 13 levels, drum n' bass 9 and jungle 7; after that comes breakcore, the fastest stretch. In endless mode the pace stands in for the level.
Tempo (bpm)
Tempo climbs with the genre: from 124–130 bpm in techno to 170–175 in drum n' bass, and up to around 194 in breakcore.
- Techno: each run picks a tempo between 124 and 130 bpm that rises little by little, level by level.
- Drum n' bass: 170–175 bpm.
- Jungle: drops 3 bpm.
- Breakcore: climbs again by up to 22 bpm, about 189–194 bpm.
Adaptive music
The music follows the same meter that tunes the CPU in adaptive difficulty.
- If you are doing well, the genre can run up to half a stretch ahead.
- If you are struggling, it falls back up to a quarter of a stretch.
- Only between levels: it never changes mid-level, and it moves gradually.
Every run has its own seed: drums, bass, key and tempos are rolled at the start, so no two runs sound the same. There are no audio files: everything is synthesized as you play, and levels are mixed together with 16-bar transitions.
Music for every moment of the game
Outside normal levels, dedicated tracks play.
| moment | what plays |
|---|---|
| frenzy | the level track pushed toward the next genre (no further than jungle), +4 bpm |
| boss | its own theme, 166–176 bpm, nudged toward the level tempo (see jukebox) |
| titan | epic drum n' bass and jungle, 172–176 bpm, in sections that follow the fight |
| 2 players | fixed track, almost drum n' bass |
| hypercycle | its own techno at 148 bpm |
| continue | fixed track at 120 bpm in E harmonic minor |
| menu | ambient techno |
In a match, a boss theme moves toward the level tempo (±4 bpm) but never drops more than 10 bpm below its own.
Frequently asked questions
Is the music in Asteroid Pong always the same?
No. It is generated live from each run's seed, so drums, bass, key and tempo change every time.
On which level does drum n' bass start?
Techno morphs gradually from level 1 and reaches full drum n' bass at level 14. If you play well it can arrive a little earlier.
How fast does the music get?
In breakcore, from level 30, it sits around 189–194 bpm.
Can I listen to the music outside a match?
Yes, in the jukebox: it has the themes of the bosses you beat and genre radios that unlock as you play.
